The Triumph of Love

QUINTUS + Special Guests (12 players in all)

Quintus presents a program celebrating the triumph of love.  This program is centred around two contrasting solo cantatas by Johann Sebastian Bach, both of which are preceded by instrumental works which create a specific ambiance for each of the cantatas.  The cantatas have in common the jubilant expression of love and faith. In Weichet nur, betrübte Schatten the love is secular and shared by two earthly creatures who are committing to each other through Cupid’s actions.  In contrast,  Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen focuses on sacred love which is born from a faith grounded in the depths of one’s soul and aimed directly towards God himself.

Weichet nur, betrübte Schatten is preceded by Vivaldi’s concerto for two trumpets.  The trumpet has a long history of highlighting festive occasions.  Whether announcing the arrival of the king or marking the beginning of a feast or a ceremony, its brightness and positively exuberant character never go undetected.  Thus, in this program we have planned the two trumpets to announce and initiate the joys of spring, love and marriage of the Wedding Cantata.

Mozart’s Church Sonata lays the ground for the sacred half of the program.  This time the atmosphere is created by a pair of violins and the organ, rather than trumpets.  Although the sonata exhibits optimism and strength of character, it does so with more restraint than the nearly reckless trumpet fanfare in the first part of the program.  This leaves room consequently  for the ultimate act of exultation as presented by the virtuosic display of  trumpets and the solo soprano voice weaving intricate webs around each other in Wilhelm Friedemann Bach’s transcription  of Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen, including two trumpets and timpani.
